What is structural editing?
Sometimes a document needs more than a copyedit. It may need significant rewording. It may need to be tailored to a specific audience. If the document has multiple authors, it may need provision of a single authorial voice. If so, your document needs a structural edit, also known as a substantive edit.
I can edit your document to ensure its structure, content, language and style are appropriate to its intended function and readership. Depending on the document, a structural edit usually includes most, if not all, of the following:
A structural review
Assessing the integrity of the overall concept of the document
Assessing whether additional material or reader aids are required (e.g. illustrations, glossary or index)
Checking whether the document fulfils the intended purpose
Assessing whether any major rewriting is required
Determining whether any sections need to be rearranged, expanded or summarised
Deciding whether any material should be relegated to an appendix or vice versa
Language and style editing
Assessing whether the language and form are suitable for the readership
Assessing whether the text flows logically
Checking whether the discussion is appropriately weighted
Deciding whether information and arguments are presented clearly
Checking for unnecessary repetition, irrelevant material and contradictions
Checking for consistency in style and tone
Checking clarity of presentation
Checking presentation is simple and effective
Assessing whether document title and headings reflect the contents
Checking whether tables, figures and other illustrative material are appropriate and clear
Checking material in tables and figures against textual references
Deciding whether appropriate referencing is included
Checking explanations of abbreviations, terms and symbols are included in the text or glossary
