Mentoring for editors
Could you benefit from personalised one-on-one guidance, support and mentoring from an IPEd-accredited editor who is trained and experienced in mentoring editors? Whether you are new to editing or an experienced editor, mentoring can boost your skills, confidence and knowledge.
I specialise in mentoring editors who edit (or want to edit) academic theses, journal articles, academic books and general non-fiction. I also mentor editors who are planning to sit the IPEd Accreditation exam, and those who want to boost their freelance business. I currently offer two mentoring programs (see below). If the type of mentoring you're seeking is not covered by my current programs, please contact me -- I would be happy to create a program to suit your needs. |

Testimonials
Wendy Monaghan has been an immeasurable support in my development as a professional editor. As a fledgling editor fresh from my IPEd accreditation, I undertook a mentoring program with Wendy, who gave me unlimited, invaluable support, advice and training, not only on editing skills but on business practices, building a client base and dealing with clients in a professional manner. I certainly wouldn’t be where I am today, running my own successful editing practice, without Wendy’s shared knowledge and guidance. I highly recommend her mentoring services to any editors looking to update or learn new skills and establish themselves as a professional in the editing arena.

Wendy Monaghan’s mentoring support has been invaluable to me. I was a fairly well-established editor when I became aware of Wendy’s program, and her advice, guidance and support has been absolutely ideal. The flexibility of her mentoring program (Program 2) suits me perfectly, and I am able to seek her help when I need it on specific topics, as well as discussing broader, ongoing issues. Her support has given me the confidence to tackle editing work outside my usual focus, and talking through professional challenges with Wendy always gives me a new perspective and extra ideas. For me, having Wendy as a mentor is like having access to a highly experienced, articulate, respected, kind and available senior colleague. This really helps mitigate some of the disadvantages of working as a solo freelancer. I warmly recommend Wendy’s mentoring services to editors at all stages of their careers.

Wendy Monaghan’s knowledge and experience was a huge help to me. I sought her assistance after not passing 1 of 3 sections of the IPEd accreditation exam. I was very keen to understand my weaknesses. Wendy and I worked on tackling all the relevant areas, and I came away from her program feeling confident and with a new-found direction. I highly recommend Wendy’s mentoring service for any editor or editor-in-training.

Wendy Monaghan has been mentoring me since I started my new career as a freelance editor in 2015. Although I had completed formal training in editing, I was not prepared—an understatement—for working alone and for making editorial decisions on copy for real-life clients. My editing skills and knowledge of the profession were below average, and I lacked confidence.
Wendy has helped me enormously to become a competent and confident editor and to develop the range of editing skills and knowledge that I aspire to achieve. Her guidance has also helped me understand that many questions relating to editing practice do not have a single correct answer and that editing is rarely clear-cut. She has shared her experience on how to make informed decisions by consulting more than one reference book, by weighing conflicting opinions, by understanding the context, and by applying various conventions and rules. She has encouraged me to go beyond expectations and to look deeper into sentence structure to achieve clarity and conciseness.
My mentorship with Wendy has been one of the most rewarding and special aspects of my journey. She has shared, so generously and openly, insights and perspectives that I would not otherwise have. Wendy is everything a mentor should be, with a depth of knowledge of the industry and the standards that professional editors are required to meet. She also has the qualities of an exceptional teacher. In this respect, Wendy has a calm and logical method of conveying meaning and possible solutions, especially in the context of grammar peculiarities and awkward sentence constructions. Showing me through examples and helpful suggestions, rather than telling me, has helped improve my editing skills and increase my level of professionalism.
She is an exceptionally talented editor who is held in high esteem among the editing community, including the respective editing branches of the Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd). As a mentor, Wendy genuinely cares and invests considerable time and energy in the partnership. I have always been impressed by the sincerity and openness of her feedback and comments. She has always provided wise and considered answers to my many, and often cryptic, questions.
Wendy’s commitment to the profession of editing goes well beyond one-on-one mentoring. Even though her editing skills and experience are in demand, she makes the time to support an online group of novice and experienced copyeditors who are aiming to achieve accreditation with IPEd. Always, Wendy’s breadth of editing experience shines, as does her passion for sharing her knowledge and expertise with others.
Thanks to Wendy’s intuitive support and mentorship, I am more aware of the importance of keeping up to date with industry developments and trends, and of the fact that the craft of editing will always be a work in progress because of the evolution of the English language. Wendy is progressive not only in her thinking but also in her approach to technology and business practices. She understands most aspects of an editor’s work.
I am full of gratitude to Wendy. Without a doubt, she has played a major role in the trajectory of my editorial career and influenced the editor I am today.
If you are an emerging editor or an editor who aspires to become accredited with IPEd, I highly recommend Wendy as a mentor.
