How will your academic work be copyedited?
When copyediting academic documents, I use Microsoft Word's Track Changes facility. This means every change I make to your document is 'tracked', and all suggestions or queries are inserted as comments in the margin using the Track Changes comments feature.
I will return your copyedited document in two versions: a tracked-changes (TC) version, showing all changes and comments and a 'clean-copy' (CC) version in which I have accepted all of the changes but the comments are still visible. This gives you, the author, complete control over the final version of your document. You can carefully go through the tracked-changes, accepting or rejecting each individual change, reading my comments in the margin, and choosing whether to take on board my suggestions. It is, after all, your document.
If your document has required a heavy copyedit, I will recommend that you return the document to me for proofreading after you have reviewed the changes and attended to my suggestions and queries. This is because the author-review process often results in new errors, which I can quickly eliminate for you.

Styles
Academic writing almost always requires the author to adhere to a particular style. It could be the preferred style of your university, of a journal or other periodical to which you are submitting an article or of a publisher if you are writing a book or book chapter. In some cases, you might be given no direction in terms of style but be advised to be consistent with the style decisions you make. Adhering to a particular style in your writing not only requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of that style but also painstaking attention to detail.
As an academic, you almost certainly want to dedicate your time to valuable research, teaching (if you have a teaching role) and writing for publication--not laboriously mastering yet another new style for your latest submission.
I can copyedit your document following the style you request. If you are submitting an article to a journal for publication, I will adhere to the journal's chosen style. If you are unsure of the style required for your document, I can advise you.

Citations and referencing
Ensuring in-text citations, reference lists and bibliographies are complete, correct, formatted and punctuated to the required citation style can be one of the most time-consuming aspects of academic writing. However, it is essential.
I can remove the hard work from this onerous task and ensure your citations and reference list or bibliography are complete and formatted according to the style you are using. Although the two most commonly used styles of source citation are the documentary-note style and the author-date style, there are many other referencing styles. These include ACS style (American Chemical Society), AGLC style (Australian Guide to Legal Citation), AMA style (American Medical Association), APA style (American Psychological Association), IEEE style (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), MLA style (Modern Language Association) and Vancouver style. I can edit your source citations and reference list according to any of these (or other) styles. If you are submitting an article to a journal for publication, I will adhere to the journal's chosen style.
